Enhancement

All weapons and armor can be Enhanced unless the tooltip says "cannot be enhanced". This adds Rank (+1 to +15) to the item which adds various stats in addition to the basic stats. Depending on the item this can be additional HP and MP or other stats such as paralyze, stun or crit (or resists).

It is important to enhance equipment, even if you do not intend to use it, before using the Extractor
Extraction results improve significantly if all four items placed within are at least +7 and increase exponentially above +7.

Enhancement is a system that adds stats to equipment. Not all equipment can be enhanced.

Enhancement will add a numbered prefix to the name of the item, increasing with each successful enhancement (+1, +2, +3, etc.) The bonus stats added from each enhancement increases exponentially. From +6 onwards, the equipment and/or the materials has a chance of failing and being destroyed. Rare equipment have a chance of deleveling from +6 onward.

The enhancement level of an equipment will carry over to its crafted counterpart.

The maximum level of enhancement for items of normal (white) and magic (green) grade is +12.
Enhancement can be done at the blacksmith, and will require a type of onyx based on the level of the item.

Geodes

Geodes are items that allow players to upgrade an item to a certain enhancement level, bypassing the normal enhancement system. The item cannot fail this enhancement, and will have its enhancement level set to the specified level noted on the geode. Geodes have a rarity requirement, and may have an enhancement level requirement in order to be used on an item.

The description on the tooltip makes it sound like a Level 24 Geode works only on level 24 and above items, but this is inconsistent and almost certainly unintentional. Although they all say "or higher", it should be "or lower" and actually works that way with most Geodes. Occasionally you will find a Geode that refuses to work that way, though. This should be considered a bug. Just shrug, say "Open Beta" three times under your breath, and move on. Also, some descriptions say they item must already be a certain rank, but this is clearly false as the "required rank" is always one less than the rank target of the Geode.

Just like a spark, Geodes work on anything lower than their stated target. So, a +5 Level 24 Hair Vortex Geode will work on any Normal or Magic Headgear item of level 24 or below and advance it directly to +5 with no chance of failure. It cannot be applied to an item that is already +5 or better.
NOTE: Geodes all stack to 10 BUT they have to be exactly identical to do it.

Low Level Enhancement Guide

In Dragon Nest, you are able to enhance most of your gear at the blacksmith.
So far, we noticed that you are unable to enhance some items such as accessories and items you had obtained from Quests.

Enhancement Materials

  • Normal or Magic Equipment - No materials needed for +1 to +8.
  • Rare Equipment - Onyx or Diamond Lustres needed for all Ranks.
  • Epic Equipment - Lustres needed depends on the class of the item. Additional materials may be needed depending on Level and Rank.
Now at low levels, it is very important to enhance your gear because the cost is low and the reward is high. That is, it will allow you to solo low level dungeons with ease.
To start things off, you will want to visit your town’s blacksmith, you will need to talk to a blacksmith (such as Korin in Carderock Pass). Go to (Trade) -> (Enhance) to open the Enhance Item box.
Go ahead and select (Enhance) and you will be taken to the next screen:
Right click on your desired item and it will be placed into the left window. You will now be able preview what your item’s enhancement potentials will be if your upgrade is successful.

When done one of four results will be reported:
  • Success - You have enhanced the item.
  • Failure - You failed to enhance the item.
  • Failure - You failed to enhance the item and lost a Rank (only above +8)
  • Destruction - You have failed and the item you were enhancing has been destroyed (only above +6).
Regardless of the result the enhancement materials will be consumed.
The percentage chance of failure is lower on 2 conditions.
  • The lower the Rarity of the item.
  • The greater the difference between the level of the item and the level of the player, so a level 24 player enhancing a level 15 Normal item is almost a guarantee to at least +8.

Notice how insanely cheap it is.  We predict that this price will go up in future versions. You will now be prompted with the following warning:
Your item will remain safe until +6 enhancement level. Therefore, it is suggested that you enhance your items to +6 right away.
After this, any further enhancement might destroy your item. However, if you’re lucky…
But once you get too greedy…

Even though sometimes you will be able to get to +10 with 0 failures, it is more likely your luck will run out before you get there. Now what’s the best strategy to combat this?

The best strategy is to have a spare. Let’s say you have 2 identical shields. First, you want to enhance both of them to +6. Now you’re free to enhance the 1st one to +8. If it breaks prior to +8, then you should find another spare while wearing your 2nd +6. However, if it works, you can now try to enhance the 2nd one to +8 as well. Once you have a spare +8, you can now go for +10!  With patience and this strategy, you too can be a proud owner of +10s!

Enhancement max level is +12. The cost of enhancement goes up considerably after +8, usually requiring additional reagents such as multiples of Onyx Shards or Crude Onyx.

To make matters worse, starting at +9 enhancement level, every enhance failure will set you back 1 level. Example: if you fail at +10, even if your equipment was not destroyed, it will now be a +9. Equipment will not reduce below +8.
12 enhancements is the max one can do, plus after +8 you need more then a fee, usually onyx shards or crude onyx, and finally if you fail an enhancement and the item was always over +8 it will lose an enhancement level, that is if it doesn’t get destroyed.

E.g. : let’s say he tries to enhance that shield again, if it fails but it doesn’t brake it’ll go back to +9, and lastly if he fails two more times it will stay at +8 and not go back to +7.

Protection Jellies

After Rank 6 you risk destroying the item you are trying to enhance unless you use Item Protection Jellies. Protection Jelly can be purchased in the Dragon Vault. The number of Jellies required increases as the Rarity, Level and Rank of the item increases. Even if protected you will still lose the enhancement materials and can still lose an item Rank.

Biggest tip for enhancing

If you fail twice on the same equipment, that's enough for the day.
Whenever I failed twice, I will fail 4-6 more times afterwards, and I noticed this recurring pattern around me as other people enhance their items.
(You can see if someone's enhancing because an icon appears above their head : ).
